Live-in Staff Volunteer Opportunities

Intern Program

Saint Joseph's House of Hospitality needs caring, hardy people who can serve as Live-in Staff at our South Avenue shelter. They will become a part of a spiritual community that is dedicated to helping the needy and feeding the hungry. Staff members serve guests at our soup kitchen, assist during drop-in's, staff the homeless shelter and provide the Acts of Mercy to members of the Saint Joe's community.

Helping those in need at Saint Joe's as a staff person is an experience that will never be forgotten. Click on the images below to learn why three of our staff volunteers made the committment to help the needy, the homeless and hungry.

Staff volunteers will live at Saint Joe's House of Hospitality rent-free, and participate in the Catholic Worker programs.

See an interview of Mike Hazel's experience as a Saint Joe's staff member in 2013.

Each Worker is Accountable to these Guidelines.
All Community Members are Charged to Support their Implementation

  • Presence in Hospitality, Kitchen or Bakery 8am to 2pm. One weekday
off per week. Weekends off. (on call when need arises)
  • Emergency Shelter: on call Oct. to April. Up to two nights a week as host.
  • Each Worker will ‘take the house’ one day a week and be responsible for phones (house line and cell), laundry, donations, financials and visitors.
  • Participation in: newsletter, housekeeping for 3rd floor common areas, twice monthly community meetings, weekly kitchen/hospitality meeting, weekly Worker dinner and other events just for fun.
  • Workers will fully participate in consensus decision-making after a 3 month introduction. Workers should be made aware of the guidelines and given the reasons for them.
  • All new community members need to be aware of and support the House Vision Statement.
  • All community members must practice open non-violent communication in dealings with other community members and guests. All should support non-violent peace and justice activities.
  • There are opportunities for you to respond to your spiritual call. We encourage twice weekly community prayer, weekly house service, personal retreats (2 per year) and participation in the yearly full- community retreat.
